1/11/99 - INDIA GOLD FESTIVAL ENDS AFTER DISAPPOINTING CROWDS

NEW DELHI, Jan 12, 1999 (Asia Pulse via COMTEX) -- A month-long Gold Shopping Festival in the Indian capital ended after drawing less than the anticipated response.

"Gold retailers are a little better off than they were before the festival began. Had there been no festival, the market would have been in a far worse shape," World Gold Council (WGC) Manager (North) G S Pillai told Press Trust of India (PTI) on Monday.

The Festival had drawn about 40,000-50,000 buyers, far less than the targetted 150,000 customers, but considering the general recessionary trend in the country, it was satisfactory, he said.

The Delhi Gold Shopping Festival, which ended on Sunday, was held on the lines of the Dubai Shopping Festival, attempting to lure more customers by offering half a kg of gold every day to the winner of a lucky draw.

"The response to the festival was good, considering that the month of December is usually a dull period for gold trade," All India Bullion Merchants Association president Sheel Chand Jain said.

Trade turnover during the festival was reported to be Rs 400-500 million, he said.
