Jesus the Man

An idea is not responsible for those who hold it. A man is not responsible for what is done with his doctrines after his death. Jesus was never baptized a Christian, he was Jewish born, perhaps of the royal line, read scripture and was a Jew -- a reform, even revolutionary Jew. If anyone imagines that Jesus would tolerate the bigots, hatred mongers, and devils who abuse his memory by claiming to be follower, he is simply wrong. Jesus learned to tolerate gentiles. He never demanded that those he tried to help believe some doctrine or dogma. He never condemned, but simply told people to sin no more. Jesus associated with fishermen, tax collectors, and prostitutes, because he liked them and they needed his help. He learned not even to reject centurions -- Roman officers, although they were feared and despised by his countrymen. He was humble -- did not wear jewel mounted robes like the bishops and the high priests -- but put aside his garment, knelt naked, and washed the feet of his disciples. He did not deal in war -- but made Peter put up his sword and healed Malchus whom Peter struck. He went unresisting to his death on the cross, fearing that he was forsaken by his God, and that his mission of Peace and healing was a failure.
Jesus does not belong to the priests, evangelists, or popes but to you and me and any who understand the essential man. Jesus does not dwell in glory on the right hand of God. He lives only in the hearts and minds of everyone who loves mercy, truth, and justice in the world -- and sees in him a hero and a model whose memory is to be loved and imitated. We do not have to turn from ordinary pursuits to remember him. We can be true and just and merciful in each act of each our daily lives. We need not fear him for his imagined power. We need only love the fight he made to help all people in their struggle to abide a cruel and indifferent world.

X,
That is a common stereotype. Having money is not a sin. The point is where is your heart. Jesus may have told the rich young ruler to give it all away and follow Him because Jesus knew that the young man's heart was with his treasure and unless he could part with that treasure he could not be a disciple. But someone has to handle the money for God's work. There were those that did that when Jesus was here on earth as a man, and I'm not referring to Judas. And there is now and always has been.

X:

I must admit it X. Yes, I must admit that sometimes you have flashes of pure rationality!!!

No I blame the natural urge in humans to fasten their identities on a group- and create figures like Jesus, which have much good in them, but also pander to the more destructive tribalistic urges. Jesus is a tribal totem- he is better than some and worse than others. If you followed him you would not be on SI- you would have given away your worldly possessions and you would be ministering to lepers and those truly in need.

So don't talk to me about Jesus when you clearly have coins in your pocket.
