Canal+ Readies Interactive Content

French media giant Canal+ announced an initiative at the Consumer Electronics Show is Las Vegas to develop applications that will create and expand future and existing offerings of interactive digital television content around the world.

Sun Microsystems and Canal+ TECHNOLOGIES, the technology division of Canal+, are developing interactive television applications based on the Java programming language. Services that will be highlighted include an electronic program guide, games and an interactive navigation tool.

"The use of Java technology and Canal+ middleware MEDIAHIGHWAY give digital television operators the flexibility to work with a large number of set-top box manufacturers using different hardware platforms and operating systems," the company said. "It also opens up the market for the creative community to come up with original interactive television content."

Canal+ has strong DTH efforts in Europe, including digital broadcaster CanalSatellite, considered the top home satellite service on the continent.
