Former Execs of World's First DVD Magazine Launch BroadcastDVD: A New Force in Broadband Advertising and E-commerce MILPITAS, Calif.--(ENTERTAINMENT WIRE)--Jan. 11, 1999--At the Microsoft/Intel DVD & DirectShow Developer Days, James Volk and Scott Epstein, former co-founder and marketing director, respectively, of the critically acclaimed SHORT cinema journal DVD, Monday announced the formation of a new DVD production and publishing house -- BroadcastDVD. "We learned a tremendous amount in our first two years in DVD," said company President & Chief Executive Officer Volk. "We developed the first DVD magazine, pushed the technology's envelope, received critical acclaim, and secured great OEM and advertising deals. A few months back, we decided that it was time to stretch our wings and develop the format further. "We formed BroadcastDVD to develop a new family of products called 'DV SHOWS' (original, interactive, Web-connected, advertising and e-commerce-supported digital video shows) that we think will change the way people see DVD." Created as a full-service DVD production and publishing house, Santa Monica-based BroadcastDVD is releasing its initial slate of DV SHOWS into retail stores beginning late in the first quarter. The DV SHOWS will integrate Web-connected broadband advertising and e-commerce with compelling content targeted to consumers' affinities in the areas of film, TV, comedy and music. In addition to the DV SHOWS, BroadcastDVD will be providing a full range of services to assist independent producers and corporations with their DVD needs, from concept development, to content filming, menu design, marketing and distribution. "Sales of DVD are soaring," stated company co-founder and Vice President of Marketing Epstein. "With predictions of an installed base exceeding 40 million DVD ROMs by the year 2000, DVD will clearly be the first widely distributed Web-connected broadband platform. In addition to DVD's explosive growth, e-commerce is booming, with online sales recently reported to be up 333 percent year over year." "The next step in the e-commerce boom is broadband," stated Epstein. "DVD penetration is broadband penetration, and the companies that create the successful DVD advertising and e-commerce vehicles could very well become the next Yahoo or Excite; we think that BroadcastDVD will be one of those companies." "DVD Demystified" author and BroadcastDVD advisor Jim Taylor is excited about the company's prospects. "There is a great need for alternative Web-connected DVD programming to make the most of DVD-ROM computers," Taylor said. "Microsoft's support for HTML-based DVD playback means new discs can combine the best features of the Internet with movie-like audio and video from DVD, and BroadcastDVD's titles will be among the first to make good on that promise."
