Pentium III vs. Alpha. The PIII is a 32 bit chip - it is the next generation design for 'standard' high performance desktops, and eventually 32 bit servers.

Alpha is a 64 bit chip, designed for high-end workstations and large servers.

I expect CPQ to increasingly differentiate between the 32 bit lines and the 64 bit products, as they and MSFT get closer to a full range 64 bit offering. Alpha can address huge memory directly (some models can hold 32 GB of RAM), and 64 bit operations have a number of advantages for database and web server applications. Only CPQ will be able to offer 64 bit systems in the near future, now that Intel's IA64 architecture has gone into the ditch.
