Interesting optimistic comments from Goldman Sachs analyst Rick Sherlund from an article about sofware sales on DJ newswire:(excerpt)

And Siebel Systems Inc. (SEBL), which makes programs to automate sales and other front-office functions, should post a big jump in fourth-quarter profits, Sherlund estimates. He puts net for the period at $16 million, or 16 cents a share, compared with a year-earlier loss of $14.9 million, or 43 cents, including a $22.7 million pretax writeoff. Sales more than doubled to $119 million from $42.2 million, he estimates.
"The market penetration in sales force automation is 3% to 4%, so they might be able to push through 1999 without any impact from Y2K," Sherlund said.
