All other things being equal, why would ATHM prefer to partner with T, when AOL has more subscribers than all other ISPs combined? If ATHM is serious about being developing their own high-bandwidth backbone to go along with their portal, I don't know what they would gain by partnering with AT&T. They would do better to partner with a company that provides what they lack, which is subscribers. Granted, not many of today's subscribers would be able to access the service, but given that partnership, with 50M potential users, cable companies would have an a huge incentive to hook up end users. I doubt if the cable companies care what service a user accesses, as long as they are paying a fee.
