>>> Was L. Dole drawing a salary from the Red Cross?? Why did I think that the Red Cross was a volunteer organization. Do you mean that I was one of those contributors that was paying the Doles salary. <<<

A long time ago that was a volunteer org. Dole has more or less privatized it. Yes, you can send them money and they still get a tax deduction.

The relief part of the agency has been split from the blood bank folks, and the relief part still works with some volunteers. It is still more of a genuine charity organization. Donate money to them only, is my take, and target it to some particular cause if you don't want to see it squandered. They will guarantee a high percent will get through under those conditions.

The blood bank part runs like a business. You don't even get credit for blood donated if you need help getting blood yourself anymore, not even if you have a rare blood type. No more blood 'bank' to it. Nor can you donate blood for a particular cause, like a particular disaster. Paid workers take your blood and sell it to meet salaries and cost of high-maintenance executives, and that's that. (I inquired again lately because I wanted to donate for Hurricane Mitch survivors, so I talked to both agencies. I ended up making a small donation to the relief people, but changed local agencies I donate blood with, after hearing about the way Red Cross handles business these days.)

Actually, the *American* Red Cross has gone downhill lately, and if Dole runs I expect she will be called to account for it. Lots of folks in medical and volunteer work have been quietly unhappy with her over it, but I expect that to be more vocal an issue in a 2000 election. After that, they will forget, but hey, after that she might as well forget it, because everyone will forget her by 2004.
