When I married in the mid seventies, it was a scandal to keep one's own surname -- O.K., it was my father's name, sop to the feminists, but it was my name; I'd begun establishing professional credentials. You would not believe the pressure to beome Mrs. someone -- Len, it was beyond belief -- to stop being myself, a professional who was about to support him through years of schooling -- to become Mrs. him. It was crazy, even he knew it.
