Actually I am still unclear about the point. I assumed since he did a reinstall he wasn't concerned about anything on the entire machine. I believe he is just trying to get use of his entire drive.

If he verifies that he does not care about anything on the second partition then would he be able to solve the problem by just reformatting the D? Is it possible that the new installation went to the D partition and the C is not seen?

Yes, dskprobe.exe in the NT resource kit will allow you to view
and edit the partition table. It only runs from NT, though.
