If all the trades were buys, or taken by the offer, the stock would simply go up. If all the trades were sells, or taken by the bid, the price would go down. Usually, when you look at the day's trading, the fluctuation in prices tends to indicate a buy or a sell. It is not 100% accurate as if there are sells, then lets say nothing happens for a while. Now the MM gets bids and offers in between the spread. Well the spread could change without a sale, then a buy could happen at the same price the last sell went for.
During the rush hour, when you watch the spread and compare the buys and sells against the offers and bids, you will see many strange things happen. (I don't know if this is the way all tickers show the data or if it is just a peculiarity of Stock Watch). You will see sells outside of the spread, or bid the same or higher than the offer, all kinds of weird stuff.
If you go back and look at the trades for the day, I think you can predict with fairly good accuracy when the buys and when the sells occurred.
