01/12/1999 - Europe's 1st Hydrogen Filling Station Opens Hamburg, Germany - A consortium betting on a future that includes large numbers of zero-emission, hydrogen-powered vehicles today opened Europe's first hydrogen filling station, reports Reuters. The liquefied hydrogen refueling station in Hamburg, Germany is part of a joint venture that includes Deutsche Shell. Fritz Vahrenholt, a Deutsche Shell spokesman, said, "Hydrogen will be the most important energy source of the 21st century. Long-term, it will replace oil and gas." Prototype vehicles using fuel cells have been able to harness up to 70 percent of the fuel's energy, versus a fuel efficiency of 23 percent or less for conventional engines. When hydrogen is used in fuel cells to create electricity, the only emissions are heat and pure water vapor. Several automakers are working to bring fuel-cell vehicles to market; DaimlerChrysler said it expects to have some on the market in 2004. Hamburg already has hydrogen-fueled vans (News Notes 1/10/98).
