Take a look at Lucent's SEC filing. Lucent's fastest growing business is outside of the US. Certain regions are growing at twice the rate of the US. Lucent sells communication gears in every continent the world. I don't have the exact numbers, but Lucent out sells Cisco in the international market by a few factors. Why do you think Acatel has been doing so badly in the recent quarters? It's not because of Cisco. I was in China a couple months ago. In China Daily, the national English news paper, Lucent had a huge one page ad in it. For the one month that I was there, I read this paper every day. Only Philips had an ad half the size of Lucent's, and it was because Philips sells a lot of consumer electronics in China. Lucent's is trying to implant an instinct in everyone's head, that is "Lucent makes the things that make communications work". Do a survey with non-technical people, there are far more people with awareness of Lucent than Cisco. Do a survey with technical people, I bet most would have more respect for Bell Lab than Cisco. But we are investors, $$$$ is why we invest. It is a fact that Cisco is ahead of Lucent in data networking, and the world of communications is evolving more towards data networks. But communications is much larger and more complicated than what the Cisco gears can handle. With the acquisition of Ascend, Lucent can offer every thing that Cisco can offer to a telecomm company with the addition of DWDM, Wireless, telephone switching, messaging, billing system, call center, complex controlling software, and reliability. Lucent is going after the whole world of communications, and Cisco is going after only a portion. But this portion is the most profitable one, and that's why every communications equipment company is going after it.
