My friend you have an extremely narrow perspective.

A company can do in house R&D and or a company can out in the market and purchase a "hot product"/company. By purchasing of the shelf you have a better feel for what the return will be, get a product to market sooner, have patents and it is definitely seen in the bottom line sooner and so forth and so on.

Either way when you do the PV or FV calculations it all comes down to you can pay me now or pay me later.

After all, why do you think LU purchased ASND?
I'll tell you why - they are way behind IP when it comes to CSCO and they have to play catch up.
