Can you be more specific by what you mean by derivative? I have an ARM. By definition, that is a derivative, and I don't think the bank that is holding it has taken any undue risk.

BTW, I agree that there will eventually come a time to pay the piper. But some of these days I wonder if this country is in 1989 Japan, or 1985? From time to time I recall Cramer who speaks of a call he made earlier in the decade to short the Nikkei and long the Dow until they crossed over, and if that will be the key.
