Brian, <Kernel size and cache swapping>
The resident kernel size is relatively small,
no more than 2-4MB, and with 64MB of RAM no
virtual page swapping has practically occur
after the system boots.
I did include it into my "in reality.."
remark.

The 290MB is mostly service junk, on-line
service promotions, useless apps, Win tours,
megabytes of help files, sounds, weird fonts
and picture bitmaps, databases for ALL KNOWN
HARDWARE including pre-historical, etc. etc.
