Dade: Usually you have to be with the underwriter as a customer or, be with a broker that gets a piece of the IPO like E*Trade does or sometimes Schwab.

Schwab deals with 3 underwriters, CS First Boston, Hambrecht & Quist, and .... dang it, I forget the other but it is a good name.

With Schwab, you must be one of their preferred members which means that you must put up with their slow system and be willing to pay ungodly commissions. :o)
