>>Re: SBC....I thought they'ld aligned with Alcatel already, no?<<

Very, VERY old news but still worth re-reading nontheless.
From SBC's web site:

Consortium Makes ADSL Vendor Selection
Consortium Designed to Drive Down ADSL Costs and Speed Deployment
San Antonio, Texas, October 7, 1996

A joint procurement consortium formed by Ameritech, BellSouth, Pacific
Bell and SBC Communications Inc. has announced its selection of Alcatel Telecom as supplier of high-speed data access equipment, pending successful contract negotiations.

Alcatel was chosen from among numerous firms that responded to the
consortium's solicitation for bids on asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) -related equipment to meet customers' high speed data network access needs, such as from a personal computer. While contract talks between Alcatel and each of the four companies are expected to be complete by year's end, the companies have not ruled out the possibility of working with the other two finalists -- Ericsson and Westell Technologies -- and any other ADSL technology suppliers in the future.

Also, from the good Dr's posting from 12/15/98:

LU news, those Lu sales people are jonesing for SLC-2000 and as soon as its ready LU/WSTL win in BLS, SBC and TBR..
