The MacOS should have both preemptive multi-tasking and protected memory since the PowerPC was designed with this purpose in mind but be honest, it is there to cover someone's lack of design skills on most systems. Indeed, it is there to cover the fact that <gasp> code is programmed by humans and <double gasp> humans make mistakes. At a rate of a bug every 20 lines of code to be precise. About 95% of those bugs are eliminated during testing. The rest stay there, waiting to be discovered when somebody happens to press the escape key while browsing a java applet in one thread and reloading a new page on the other (this is an actual netscape bug I once came across).
