Michael,

Firewire isn't a replacement for SCSI, nor is it faster. Firewire is a serial bus that is currently at 400 Mb/s. SCSI is a parallel bus that at only 80MBytes/s (Ultra SCSI 2?) = 640 Mb/s is faster than Firewire. I think that SCSI is now up to 120 MBytes/s (160 burst?). There are plans to take Firewire to 1.2 Gb/s, though. Fiber channel is probably the successor to SCSI. The great thing about Firewire is the number of devices that you can string along (132?), the distance that they can be from the computer, and the power that is part of the cable. So, it might make sense to connect an external hard drive or removeable storage drive using Firewire; with no need to have the drive plugged into an outlet.

Pravin.
