I don't know about Schwab. Waterhouse has a box to check for whether you have the shares in your account or not. I have always assumed that was for people that prefer to keep their certificates out of the hands of evil, conspiritorial short sellers. <g>

Please short frequently using this option and report back whether you get in trouble or not.

Eric,

Not sure what software they may have to stop it, but they can flag your account where you can't trade online if they want! I think you could get by every once in a while, but do not abuse it, and if they do ask like you say just say oops!
