Rubin says hopeful Brazil will get through crisis

WASHINGTON, Jan 12 (Reuters) - U.S. Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin said on Tuesday he was hopeful ailing Brazil could work its way through a serious economic crisis but cautioned there were no ''certainties''.

''I start with the view that the Brazil program should work,'' he told reporters in a briefing, referring to the country's economic reform program, agreed to as a condition for the $41.5 billion bailout program worked out under the auspices of the International Monetary Fund last November.

''It's a good program when it was announced, and President (Fernando Henrique) Cardoso is deeply committed to getting this done. Politics obviously is the key, but it seems to me there's a lot of reasons to be hopeful that politics will work their way through this, although there are no certainties,'' he said.<<
