CANAL+ TEAMS UP WITH PIONEER, DIVICOM AND C-CUBE
CANAL+ has forged an international alliance with consumer electronics giant Pioneer and US-based C-Cube Microsystems and DiviCom to offer digital TV operators a comprehensive, fully-integrated system that covers all the functions in the digital chain, from data compression and digital signal scrambling to interactive multimedia set-top boxes for subscribers. This end-to-end system is based on open international standards and can thus interface with any equipment on the market. CANAL+ will contribute its Mediahighway middleware and Mediaguard conditional-access systems. Under the terms of the agreement, CANAL+ and Pioneer will jointly market the system and develop related applications, and will act as systems integrator. Pioneer will produce the digital set-top boxes for use in Europe, the United States and Japan. C-Cube Microsystems will participate in the development of the digital terminal, with CANAL+ and Pioneer, and will supply the terminal's main components, while DiviCom will supply head-end equipment. CANAL+ digital technology equips more than 1.8 million digital set-top boxes in Europe. It will soon be used by the world's first over-the-air digital operator, ONdigital (formerly British Digital Broadcasting), which is to be launched before the end of the year in the United Kingdom.
