Thanks for suggesting a quote lookup!

I was using the quote lookup on the mutual fund order page, which doesn't show marginable status.

I just did it on the regular order page, and see the NM. I entered BEARX (under $5), as well as SLMCX, which is well over $5, and both came up NM.

If mutual funds are non-marginable, that's too bad. My old broker (Jac White) margins mutual funds. It certainly makes sense, since they are less volatile than stocks as a rule.

Jack White also allows you to short mutual funds, though I doubt that makes much sense, except for index funds. (And then I'd probably rather just short SPY.) (Presumably, fund managers are trying to avoid loss, and you're probably better-off shorting an index.)

(Not sure if the acquisition of Jack White by Waterhouse changes any of this.)

Good point. I also had checked FMAGX which is at 124.57 and marked NM as well and I should have mentioned that.
