No, they don't. They are given shares in the new company. But, it is my understanding that in order for longs to get their new shares, they have to call in their shares that were borrowed by shorts and therefore the shorts must buy the shares in the open market (or cover). I've seen a number of stocks really rocket the day before a symbol change. I think it's due to short covering.

NM is going to change to ETV sometime in the next couple of months. About 20% of the float is short. I'm trying to figure out if this is a no brainer, since short covering should push the price up.
