For several days I've been watching all the discussion of this new graphics card and monitor. Won't much of this same functionality become available soon at mass-market prices as HDTV sets proliferate?

How will they be able to sell them for thousands of dollars then?

JMHO.

1600SW Flat Panel, 320 and Number 9 confusion

You don't need the Number 9 card to connect the flat panel to the 320 (or the O2), you do need a small daughter card (credit card size) the attaches to the mother board next to the standard video output. This card will be included (pre-installed if order with the 320) when you buy the display for the 320 and the 02.

If you want to use the flat panel with any other PC (Dell for instance) or a Macintosh you will need a Number 9 card (PCI or AGP). The last few inches of this card contains much the same electronics as the daughter card.

Apart from the Macintosh, I have installed and used the flat panel on an O2, 320 and Dell.

1600SW and Nine Card,

David,

The Number Nine card is NOT used in the SGI 320, SGI 540, or the SGI O2. When you order the 1600SW for use in a system manufactured by SGI you do NOT get a Number Nine card. To use the 1600SW in a machine manufactured by SGI you need a small adapter card that connects the on board video system to the monitor. The small adapter card is manufactured by SGI and has nothing to do with Number Nine as a company. To use the 1600SW with any computer NOT manufactured by SGI you need the Number Nine card.

I agree that the following paragraph from this link is confusing :

visual.sgi.com{e6a003d8-800c-11d2-b4d6-00c04fa34a34}?code=MON00003U

"The Silicon Graphics 1600SW flat panel monitor supports platform flexibility through a Flat Panel Bundle that includes Number Nine Visual Technologies' Revolution IV-FP card. This card allows the monitor to work with Windows® 95/98 and Windows NT® PCs and with the Apple® Macintosh®. The Revolution IV-FP is easily installed and comes in both PCI and AGP versions."

I work for SGI and I can assure you that what I have said is accurate and true.
