I called up Compaq after reading Steve's first posting [where he said shareholders could get $150. off a CPQ PC].The fellow in the Prosignia area told me he didn't know about this, but different divisions had separate offers and he would transfer me to the Presario people. He then told me about the package I already knew about--the one with the printer and UPS.

Before I was transferred I asked him what the basic difference were between the Prosignia and Presario lines. He said Prosignia's were made better, that they were made to be on all day and last longer than the Prosignia's. I expressed surprise that what he was describing as a "crummy" line was more expensive at initial look. He said Prosignia's had better motors and would not break-down the way Presario's would--the reason why a Prosignia came with a 3 year warranty.

Not exactly happy, to put it mildly, with what I was just told, I next asked the person in the Presario area what the basic differences were between the two lines. His answer was that he could not figure out the differences himself other than the Prosignia's came with Windows NT and the Presarios, with Windows 98. When I told him the Presarios came with Windows 98 as well, he told me I was wrong!!!! I had the page with Prosignias loaded while I was talking to him but he kept insisting if I wanted Windows 98, I needed a Persario.

Asking him then about shareholders getting $150 off a Presario, he said to the best of his knowledge, none of the shareholder Presario deals worked out to as high as $150 off, but there were a number of deals he would tell me about if I gave him my shareholder PIN number--which I don't have so that was it. I thought I had it [which I obtained from CPQ IR] but it was wrong.

So, Rudedog, there is a heck of a lot of mis-information, some actually very disturbing [the fellow putting down the quality of the Presario line], one gets calling CPQ for information.

Did I finally get my questions answered to my satisfaction? No, I still don't know the differences between the two lines and am getting pretty sick and tired of calling so I can finally buy the PC I have been shopping for now for a month. If it weren't for the fact that having to look at "Dell" for the next x number of years really goes against the grain since I'm a CPQ shareholder, I'd throw up my arms and just buy a Dell--much less confusing and frustrating.

BTW, unlike Steve, I never got a letter from CPQ with a PIN number. Calling Schwab, they could find nothing in their records that anything had been sent to shareholders. They are looking into the matter for me. So, if Steve does not use Schwab, it looks like not all shareholders got that letter.
