If you had read the poll more carefully, you would have seen that CNN published the number of samples, and their own estimate of the margin of error, along with a statement that all of the comparisons made to which you referred (as much as you could be said to have referred to this actual poll), were technically dead heats.

That's one easy way to come to the conclusions you object to. CNNs statisticians said so, about their own poll.

Concerning California, this conversion to Democrat in the state is widely discussed, and a lot of figures are available here on redistricting and so on. Not much question that this former Republican state is going Demo in 2000. Mostly already happened. We are just waiting for the rest of the Republicans to leave office. Also, we are going to pick up a lot of seats for the state next time.
