Well, like I said, it wasn't me, it was her. Seriously. Glad she's there when I need her.

There should have been a little valve at the base of the heater. The flexible connections between the pipe and the heater, the kind that should have been there, have a little valve built-in.

I think the flame might have been two feet long, but it was hard to see, if I remember, it was only lit at the end?

Boyfriend said? I think he found me intimidating, but I don't understand why. He wasn't an engineer, however. Engineers don't find me intimidating, guess that's why I am still married to one. That's sort of non-responsive, but it's as close as I can come.

We have a lot of nifty Earthquake ShutOff Valves on our gas lines down here. It's a small box that has something like a ball bearing perched above a round hole; a strong earthquake shakes the ballbearing hard enough to make it drop, sealing the hole, cutting off the gas. A bored, misanthropic individual could wander around the neighborhood kicking these boxes, shutting off everyone's gas. But I wouldn't know.
