Jack, your opinion?

I've heard that the verb "careen" is in fact misused frequently when the speaker means "career." I looked it up and both are similar verbs. But has "careen" become an accepted use the way the dictionary now accepts "aggravated" as a synonym for "irritated" (which I'll never accept)?
