Acclaim Entertainment 1st-Qtr Profit Rises 29%, Meets Estimates Bloomberg News January 12, 1999, 2:23 p.m. PT Acclaim Entertainment 1st-Qtr Profit Rises 29%, Meets Estimates Glen Cove, New York, Jan. 12 (Bloomberg) -- Acclaim Entertainment Inc., a maker and distributor of video-game software, said its fiscal first-quarter earnings rose 29 percent, meeting estimates, on strong sales of its sports-oriented games. Net income rose to $10.3 million, or 16 cents a share, in the quarter ended Nov. 30, from $8.0 million, or 15 cents, a year earlier. Acclaim was expected to earn 15 cents, the average estimate of five analysts polled by First Call Corp. Revenue climbed 14 percent to $104.8 million from $92.3 million. Acclaim, which makes and distributes games for Nintendo Co. and Sony Corp. console systems and for personal computers, benefited from brisk sales of a new game tied to professional football, NFL Quarterback Club '99, and sales of an older game with a professional wrestling theme, WWF War Zone. ''This was a quarter in which to do the basic blocking and tackling in getting ready for Christmas,'' said Stephen Fleming, a BancBoston Robertson Stephens analyst who rates the company ''buy.'' Acclaim said it derived 60 percent of its revenue from games for the Nintendo 64 system, 31 percent for Sony PlayStation and 5 percent for PCs. North American sales accounted for 70 percent of revenue, with the remainder from internatational markets. Fleming expects a strong second quarter from Acclaim based on holiday sales of Turok 2, the sequel to a popular dinosaur hunting game. Acclaim said on Jan. 5 that it already shipped more than 1.4 million copies of Turok 2, which was released Dec. 10. 'Never in my wildest dreams did I think they would sell 1.4 million copies in 25 days,'' said Fleming. ''It's been a huge hit.'' Fleming said he expected Acclaim to sell 1 million copies of Turok in the entire second quarter. Glen Cove, New York-based Acclaim also introduced a game tied to Comedy Central's South Park television program on Dec. 21 and introduced games linked to professional basketball and hockey on Nov. 30. Comedy Central is a joint venture of Time Warner Inc., the world's largest media company and Viacom Inc., the world's fourth- largest media company.
