Jacq-- The standard for AA Nimh cells is around 1200mah. Thus at 1.2v there are 600 or so in a kwh. Here is GoldPeak's page with capacities:

You'll note that their D is only 2200milliamp hours. (I seem to remember someone is much higher than this like 4000mah, but may be mistaken.) Thus there are 2.640 watt hours in their D cell or
378 Gold Peak D cells in a kwh. I've heard that the Toyota Prius is powered by 240 D sized cells and dimly remeber this was 4kwh which would be way off the math immediately above.
