Hi, Darkgreen,

Thanks for your kind acknowledgement of my post.

I guess I should also take this opportunity to acknowledge "the utility of spirited, disciplined debate" in many common circumstances. Despite my general dislike of rhetoric, exaggeration, and sweeping generalizations, I knew I was using the rhetorical device of setting up "debate" as a strawman to further my discussion of intelligence, wisdom, and playing with ideas. If I consider debate on its own merits, I acknowledge it can be useful in a variety of circumstances. A "spirited, disciplined debate" is valuable -- extremely valuable -- when the circumstances require the best possible decision be made, and be made binding on all. I have the greatest respect for the law's adversarial process where the court is required to make a decision. No doubt such debate is equally useful to generals directing battles, CEO's and politicians considering strategy, bodies making policy, and so forth. (Of course, this is not our circumstances on this thread, where we each make our own investment decisions.) I also acknowledge its educational and entertainment value -- which sometimes is valuable indeed. I suppose in the end it is a matter of identifying the specific circumstances and applying a kind of benefit-cost calculus to know whether debate serves better than discussion.

Regards, lws
