Maybe they have a special fee for closing an account?? I'm basing my $1,000 figure on the charge of $15 per stock transfer that I was charged when I moved one cert out.

I don't understand. Can't you just liquidate your account, have them wire you money, and then set up a new account with a new broker? Hmmm, I guess your goal is to not gamble that you can buy back the stocks you want at the same or lower price with the new broker. OK, I can respect that.

Ameritrade has been frustrating lately for me. I like a lot of things about Ameritrade, but I'm making plans to switch brokers just the same. Even if I pay more in commission charges it's ok. Ameritrade certainly has taught me that they are not the best service for daytrades or momentum trades. If someone wants to be a long-term position holder Ameritrade would work out fine. But since I'm moving away from that style, wow!, have the delays hurt me!

Good luck,
Chris
