In an em correspondence with a friend who is in her thirties, is intelligent, and went to a good school, I used the phrase "moot point," and in her reply she said that she had never realized that that that word wasn't spelled "mute," but she could understand her own confusion, since "mute" and "moot" meant approximately the same thing.

This is amazing to me.
