NTERNET USERS DOUBLE ONLINE HOLIDAY SPENDING

01/13/99 -- SAN JOSE, CA -- Final results from a recently completed online survey
conducted by World Research (http://survey.com) in cooperation with EarthLink
(www.earthlink.net) reveal that Internet users more than doubled their online holiday
spending during the 1998 holiday season.

Some 2,148 Internet users reported that they would triple their online shopping and
double their online spending during the 1998 holiday shopping season.

During the 1998 holiday season, the respondents expected to spend an average of
$339 (38% of their holiday purchases) online. In contrast, these respondents spent an
average of $154 (17% of their holiday purchases) online in 1997. Overall, the
respondents reported having spent an average of $606 online in the previous twelve
months.

Although only 25% of the respondents reported using the Internet for their holiday
shopping in 1997, 80% said they either had used or planned to use the Internet for at
least part of their holiday shopping in 1998, representing an increase of over 300%.

Online Shopping by Women Soars 400%

Growth in Internet shopping was particularly strong among female Internet users. In
1997, female Internet users were a third less likely to shop online than male Internet
users. By the 1998 holiday shopping season, female Internet users were equally likely
to shop online for holiday purchases. In addition, female Internet shoppers nearly
tripled both their online holiday spending and the proportion of their holiday spending
done online.

Music, books/stationary, computer products, clothing, toys, collectibles/novelty items,
electronics, video games/systems, videos, and DVDs were the most popular items that
respondents expected to buy online during the holiday season.

"This dramatic increase in online spending is a direct result of three important factors,"
says Gregory Harmon, director of Research at World Research, Inc.

"First, Internet users have become significantly comfortable with the concept of online
shopping. Second, the variety of products and services available on the Web increased
dramatically in 1998 and will continue to grow. Third, many shoppers view the Internet
as a more convenient shopping option."

This survey was conducted by World Research in cooperation with EarthLink Network
to better understand consumer online shopping habits. It was maintained on the World
Research Web site (survey.com) and also accessible through banner ads and
hyperlinks from the EarthLink homepage and online shopping mall.

There were 2,148 respondents when the final data was tabulated on Jan. 5, 1999.
These respondents were primarily members of the World Research online panel and
visitors to EarthLink's Web sites.
