08:35 ET Ascend Communications (ASND) 74 15/16: Networking equipment maker has reached agreement to be acquired by Lucent Technologies
(LU 107 7/8). Under terms of the arrangement, ASND will receive $20 bln in LU stock, which values ASND at about $89 per share, based on LU's close yesterday. However, ASND shares bid only 4 pts higher, given likelihood LU will open lower this morning.

I TRIED!!! With the markets down, it was free money.

BUT.....

My broker (Waterhouse Securities) had the "We are busy - call back" message playing. O lost out. I wrote a letter of complaint. Bummer!
