World PC Shipments Seen Rising 15.4% in 1999, Report Says

Tokyo, Jan. 13 (Bloomberg) -- Worldwide computer sales are expected to rise 15.4 percent in 1999, as a recovery that started in the computer market in the second half of 1998 continues, said Nomura Research Institute Ltd.

Sales of desktop, portable and hand-held computers will probably rise to 106 million units in 1999, with sales of notebook computers jumping more than 33 percent to 1.8 million units, the institute said.

Corporate investment in network computers in the U.S., an increase in the number of U.S. and European homes with a computer because of the growth in electronic-commerce, and a jump in the number of computers selling for less than $1,000, has helped lift the computer market.

''The computer market made a rapid recovery in the second- half of 1998, but it hasn't come back to the 20 percent growth rate we saw for some years before,'' said the report. Last year growth was 9.5 percent.

Many computer makers have seen profits also hit by a slump in microchip prices.

Sales of desktop computers are expected to rise 14.5 percent to 86.1 million units, and laptop PCs are seen rising 18.2 percent to 18.1 million units, the report said.
