Dale - your still drinking the kool aid while everyone else has left base camp. Intel and HP have acknowledged that Merced's main strength will be backward compatibility with the IA-32 instruction set - not Performance on par with RISC. WHy do you think HP has announced that they will be extending their own PA-RISC architecture after previously betting the farm on Merced? - how about when it became apparent that in the year 2001 when Merced is available it wont have the performance of todays risc architecture never mind tommorrow's ultrasparc or alpha or pa-risc. I acknowledge that Intel is making inroads beyond the desktop but so what - the envelope is constantly being pushed. Have you tried logging into any of your electronic brokerages to check your short position on Sun? Do you think people are just waiting for Merced to show up? Anyway Sun is a lot more than just a processor - tomorrow's Sun will be different from today's (witness Sun is still referred to as the workstation manufacturer) and Sun has proven that they are smart, flexible and capable of extraordinary technological invention rather than repackaging Microsoft and Intel technology.
