It's beginning to appear that perhaps Pat M was right after all.

I was wrong in thinking LU would take out NN, but right in choosing NN's technology at the outset. When I took my first position a year ago, it was due to NN's MainStreetXpress product line and specifically the 36170. Along the way I got a bonus in the form of Alan Lutz and the management changes he subsequently made. When the company started spinning off affiliates and the Street started saying they were being spruced up to be sold, my focus may have changed but not my reasons for holding long.

Granted, my first reaction to Lucent's choosing Ascend over NN was to think my baby had been overlooked. However, that's just not so. There was a deal and TM turned it down. No one would do this without knowing he held a Royal Flush. Terry Matthews predicted the ATM market years before anyone else. The market's finally here and he's not going to be pressured into selling out according to someone else's time schedule.

Looking at the short-term landscape, Lucent and Ascend are now faced with integrating their companies and no doubt will have some digestion problems over the next 9 to 12 months. While they're on the bench, NN will continue gaining strength in the RBOC market and building its already strong position globally.

In the carrier world it's not so much how many names you can get on your dance card, but being able to stay on the floor once the music starts.

The story's not over, in fact, I suspect chapter two is just ready to begin.

Later ---

Pat
