JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (AP) - Gavin Relly, a former chairman of South African mining and investment conglomerate Anglo American Corp., died Sunday of complications from heart surgery. He was 72.

Relly became chairman in 1983 and served until 1990. He also held positions on the boards of sister companies, De Beers Consolidated Mines Ltd (Nasdaq:DBRSY - news). and Minorco SA (Nasdaq:MNRCY - news), and was chairman of Anglo American Industrial Corp.

He also worked in the coal mining, gold and steel areas.

Relly, who joined Anglo in 1949, was elected a board member in 1965 and moved to Lusaka to take over its operations in Zambia. He headed the group's North American interests from 1970 to 1973.
