Wild day today. Can't wait for Gruntal's upgrade next week. ;-)

When I worked at a large, market-leading company we always celebrated when our #2 and #3 competitors merged. It was often the last time we heard from either of them! True story.

If Lucent got Ascend cheaply, that was probably a good indication of Ascend's competitive strength vs. Cisco, and awareness that ASND couldn't survive on it's own. The company being purchased is always more knowledgeable about their own business than the purchaser. In years of watching these deals it has become obvious to me that the bigger the merger, the less likely it is to work out. Northern Telecom is a possible investment alternative to LU. Their acquisition of Bay is more mature and the stock is a lot cheaper than LU. Companies purchasing goods from companies like LU and NT have a very strong incentive to support alternative suppliers. They don't want to become a captive to one totally dominant supplier.

Are you aware of Cisco's training and development programs?
Really dramatic stuff -- can't work instantly, but will solve the long-term problems and lead a lot of people to work for Cisco while LU-ASND is still trying to clear their phone banks. Check the websites.
