Venkie. DELL is the INVESTMENT of the 90's, nobody doubts that, having risen 55,000% over this decade. I am NOT arguing that fact. I have 500 shares of DELL in my porforlio. DELL achieved this success because of its unique direct sale model. It's a proven winning formula. On the other hand, SUNW's model isn't better than its competitors, what SUNW has is better technology, better culture to adapt to an ever-changing dynamic environment. Who will win out in the long run? I can't say. Ford made his fortune not because he made better cars than others, but because of he could produce them more efficiently in his assembly lines. However, competitors eventually catch up and use the same techniques/model, and Ford is just one of the big 3 now. Xerox had some of the most innovative, brilliant ideas in the 60's 70's. It didn't become the dominant player in the computer industry. Instead, Apple, IBM, Microsoft used those ideas and flourish. My point is other competitors like Compaq, Gateway, IBM can borrow/adopt DELL's model and make DELL one of the many ordinary boxmakers. If DELL wants to remain at the #1 position, it has to find innovative way, new way to compete. SUNW has the technology, but it's still unknown how they can make a profit out of their Java technology. They need to find a way to do it to be successful. DELL has definitely been the winner in the past, but to say that they will win no matter what is ludicrous. Past performance != future gains. Potential != future gains. I don't think SUNW is a sitting duck waiting for sun rise. It's already rising, but whether it will rise to the top, it depends on from where you look at it. If I am standing on the Equator, SUN will rise to the top, just a matter of time, If I am at North Pole, then I will probably not see it in half of a year. I guess I am standing on the Equator and you are standing at the north pole now. But remember, even if you don't see it for half of a year, you will eventually see it for the other half, and you couldn't escape from it unless you go to the south pole, but then, you still have to cross the Equator. So SUNW will eventually rise no matter where you are, it's a natural phenomenon, don't fight it.
