NOVELL: Novell cuts the costs of IT ownership at Penwith College

JAN 13, 1999, M2 Communications - Novell UK, -- Cornwall based Penwith College, has chosen Novell NetWare and Z.E.N.works to reduce the cost of owning and managing its PCs and simplify its network management. The College's 1,500 users will be able to access any desktop in any College building, on a network that is easily controlled by the IT department.

Guy Guerandel, IT manager, Penwith College explains, "The College aims to be at the forefront of information technology in Further Education colleges in Britain. We are financially dependent on the number of students that enrol and increasingly, students are looking at the IT facilities available when selecting a college to attend. Z.E.N.works is fast, reliable and efficient and will allow us to provide a flexible, easily tailored IT environment for individual students, whilst continuing to reduce our total cost of ownership."

Z.E.N.works (Zero Effort Networks for users) is the first directory based desktop management tool that reduces the cost of owning networked PCs and makes using networks easier. Z.E.N.works leverages Novell's industry leading NDS functionality to make Windows based desktops easier to use and manage without sacrificing power or flexibility.

Penwith College previously ran Windows 3.1 on diskless workstations and had developed its own version of the NC. Guerandal explains, "When we upgraded to Windows 95, we lost much of the tight control over desktops and applications. Z.E.N.works will provide us with virtually all of the functionality needed to regain centralised management of the workstations." Before deciding upon Novell Z.E.N.works the College evaluated alternative products, including SMS running on Windows NT. However, after consultations with SMS corporate users, the College opted for Z.E.N.works.

Penwith College has used Novell Directory Services (NDS) since 1997. According to Guerandel, "We stayed with Novell because of the power of NDS. We are currently building most of our network management solutions around NDS and, as we are a small team, the ease of management that NDS offers was a key factor in our decision to implement other Novell solutions."

Penwith College, which already has its own intranet, running on Novell NetWare 4.11, will soon be participating in the Cygnet project, funded by the Government Office South West (GOSW). The project aims to connect 11 colleges in the South West to each other through a WAN (wide area network) and to the Internet through a 2Mb link that feeds into Plymouth and Exeter Universities. The WAN, which will be one of the largest in the South West, will run on Novell NetWare 4.11, NDS and Novell BorderManager to keep access under control and improve Internet performance.

Novell's BorderManager is the industry's first integrated family of directory enabled services that centrally manages, secures and accelerates user access to information at every network and intranet border - the point where two networks meet.

Hello Paul!

I like your insight into this IBM deal. I'm very curious to know what yu think about Lucent going after NOVL. I don't see Cisco doing it since it's already in bed with MSFT and Active Directory.

The Banyan acquisition seems good on the surface but what does that say for Windows 2000? (By the way, I have to share it's new nickname, Why 2K).

Lucent has gone through and now is merging with Ascend which I feel is a great move on their part. Ascend has been eating into Cisco's territory for some time now and their edge devices are very very good. I'm thinking that with Lucent and Ascend, we will see a true Voice over IP solution that works from end-to-end.

What's missing in that deal?

The software necessary to manage everything. NOVL has 2 products which could fill that bill: NDS and BorderManager.

I'll keep my fingers crossed on that one :)

Peter
