FIXCOR Recovery to Introduce 'Project GEORGE' at California Press Conference, '1st of Its Kind' Processing Unit - Recycles Used Plastic Motor Oil Containers
BEACHWOOD, Ohio, Jan. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- FIX-CORP INTERNATIONAL, INC. (OTC BULLETIN BOARD: FIXC - news) -- Mark Fixler, Chairman and CEO announced that a press conference has been scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 12, 1999, to introduce 'Project GEORGE™', the pilot program for the collection, processing and recycling of used motor oil containers. 'Project GEORGE™' has been made possible by a grant from the California Integrated Waste Management Board and a licensing agreement between FIXCOR Recovery Systems and AlliedSignal's Federal Manufacturing & Technologies Business Unit (patent holder for the separation process). The press conference and demonstration will be held at FIXCOR Recovery System's San Jose location where 'GEORGE™' has been up and running.
'GEORGE™' is the machine that processes the shredded plastic containers, separating and extracting 100% of the residual oil that remains inside of each discarded used oil container. This one-of-a-kind, state-of-the- art technology produces clean plastic for recycling and recovered oil for re- refining. 'Project GEORGE™' refers to the entire cleanup program that collects and transports used oil containers from drop off centers, curbside recycling programs and oil change locations, processing them and returning recycled products to the economy, while educating the public, particularly do-it-yourselfers, as to the necessity of this initiative.
Fixler comments, ''We are committed to the environmental impact as we look to expand 'Project GEORGE™' into a national program. We now have the technology to prevent millions of gallons of oil from contaminating ground water, to recover millions of pounds of plastic from the waste stream and to re-introduce both products as renewable resources. As the program develops, we look forward to the economic benefits impacting our recycling and manufacturing operations. In Canada, for example, we are currently paid to collect and process the oil containers, resulting in a reduction in the cost of our post consumer plastic supply as well as future revenues generated by oil sales.''
'Project GEORGE™', named for the separation process' inventor, AlliedSignal's George Bohnert, is an acronym for:
Grinds Plastic, Extracts Oil From Used Oil Containers; Renewing Resources & Generating Value Added End Products ... Building a Better Future!
It has been estimated that consumers in California who change their own oil, use more than 225 million one quart motor oil containers each year. An average of one ounce of oil remains in each container resulting in approximately 1.7 million gallons of residual motor oil 'legally' deposited into California landfills each year (along with 28 million pounds of plastic). Estimates reveal that there are approx. 2 billion used oil containers discarded in U.S. landfills annually -- approx. 228 million pounds of HDPE and approx. 14 million gallons of oil. To understand the magnitude of this problem and to keep these figures in proper perspective; 'One quart of oil can ruin the taste of 250,000 gallons of drinking water' and 'The used motor oil from one car's oil change, poured into a storm drain, can cause an eight acre oil slick.'
Lisa Fitzpatrick, Project Coordinator explains, ''We are not the first company to recycle oil containers. However, we are the first company to process the oily, shredded plastic in a closed-loop system without the use of water, detergents or chemicals that can cause the hazardous discharge of contaminants or additional waste by-products. Furthermore we are the only known process that recaptures 100% of the oil and plastic. GEORGE Jr., FIXCOR Recovery's portable, prototype has been operating at several locations throughout California. Working with Richmond Sanitary Services during a two week period in Richmond, CA, we diverted over 12,700 pounds of plastic and 100 gallons of oil from the local landfill. During the pilot project in the San Jose area and working with Green Team and USA Waste Management, 'Project GEORGE™' was able to divert 1,363 pounds of plastic and 72 gallons of oil in only two (2) days. Full size units will be able to process as much as 10 times the amount of material.''
Currently no national or state regulations have been issued concerning the proper disposal of motor oil containers. With the advent and implementation of 'Project GEORGE™', States can no longer ignore or avoid the used oil container recycling issue. If States or regional government agencies are allowing thousands and sometimes millions of gallons of reusable motor oil to be 'legally' buried in municipal landfills each year, and not reclaiming the maximum amount of existing discarded motor oil, then they are not in compliance with EPA Regulation CFR 40 (part 279).
Fix-Corp International, Inc. is an international environmental-based recycler of post-consumer high density polyethylene (HDPE) and producer of recycled post-consumer plastic resin for use in the manufacture of high- performance plastic pallets through wholly owned subsidiaries Fixcor Industries, Inc. and Pallet Technology, Inc. The Company is also under worldwide licensing agreement with AlliedSignal to reclaim and recycle both oil and plastic from post-consumer HDPE motor oil containers through its wholly owned subsidiary Fixcor Recovery Systems, Inc.
