Other global suppliers seen as behind Nortel and Lucent, are Europe's Siemens AG, Alcatel SA and LM Ericsson . Analysts said they need to develop their own products quickly, or turn to acquisitions. ''This (the Lucent/Ascend deal) won't have any impact on 1999 business, but certainly the Europeans have to rethink their positions for 2000 and beyond,'' said Neil Barton at Merrill Lynch in London.
