E*TRADE and United Airlines Sign Exclusive Marketing Agreement

Thursday January 14, 8:25 am Eastern Time

Agreement Brings Power of E*TRADE to More Than 25 Million United Airlines Mileage Plus Members

PALO ALTO, Calif., Jan. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- E*TRADE Group Inc. (Nasdaq: EGRP - news) and United Airlines today announced an exclusive marketing agreement to enable both E*TRADE customers and United Airlines Mileage Plus members to earn up to 50,000 Mileage Plus miles per year. The agreement represents another facet of E*TRADE's customer acquisition strategy. Under the agreement, more than 25 million United Airlines Mileage Plus members will have several options to earn Mileage Plus miles, including opening a new E*TRADE account and referring new customers to E*TRADE. The promotion is expected to begin in February 1999.

''Through this agreement, we're able to reach a large group of individuals that closely match E*TRADE's target audience,'' said Jerry Gramaglia, senior vice president of marketing for E*TRADE. ''Our overall marketing strategy focuses on the more than 10 million individuals who conduct research online, but place trades through traditional means. This agreement between the world's largest airline and the most visited online investing web site makes perfect sense for both companies, and provides another exclusive benefit for our customers.''

''We are pleased to have E*TRADE join our growing list of innovative frequent flier partners and programs,'' said Patricia Mash, president of Mileage Plus marketing for United Airlines. ''E*TRADE offers our Mileage Plus members more mileage earning opportunities when these self-directed investors avail themselves of E*TRADE's numerous consumer benefits.''

Additional information for consumers will be available next month on the Destination E*TRADE web site (www.etrade.com).
