Philips to Make Digital Decoders for Kirch Group, Paper Says

Amsterdam, Jan. 14 (Bloomberg) -- Royal Philips Electronics NV won a contract with the Kirch Group to supply digital television decoders to the German market, allowing it to compete with Nokia Oyj, which previously had exclusive rights to decoder technology developed by Kirch with German pay-TV venture Premiere and Deutsche Telekom AG, Dutch daily Het Financieele Dagblad reported. The German market is expected to grow to 1 million decoders per year, and should allow Philips to add to the 1.5 million decoders per year it already produces for the European market and become a mass producer, the paper said, citing Philips' manager for digital receivers. The decoders will be capable of interactive TV services such as Internet access.

Philips said early last month it's working with several other European and Japanese electronics makers to develop a digital entertainment device standard, to ensure international compatibility of electronics hardware.
