Re: xDSL & Bell-Atlantic:

Hi John & everyone,

About 6 weeks ago I got an offer from Bell-Atlantic for DSL service. Thought it might be interesting for everyone to see the basic terms, and I'd be interested in any responses.

The basic terms:
> using my current isp: ("Infospeed DSL -- Monthly Rates")
$39.95/month for 640k
59.95 for 1.6m
109.95 for 7.1m

> using BellAtlantic.net ("Infospeed DSL Internet Packages -- Monthly)
$59.95/month for 640k
109.95 for 1.6m
189.95 for 7.1m

> Sweeteners: "Order BellAtlantic.net DSL service and get a Westell DSL modem for just $49. Just make a 12-month commitment. In addition to the special modem price (which includes $50 cash back), you'll get home installation and an Ethernet card for FREE. That's a savings of up to $434. When you order Infospeed DSL [ie, with my isp], you'll pay a $99 service connection fee. With BellAtlantic.net, you'll get the full DSL connection for just $148. Then you'll pay just a convenient, flat monthly rate. ...30 day refund..." Call www.BellAtlantic.com/infospeed ... etc.etc.

The 39.95 version sounds mildly attractive; the pricing structure otherwise is a tad strange...but haven't checked it out...

Any comments anyone? Modem costs? Outside of quick access to the net as a whole, does this higher speed connect faster to specific sites? Any impressions? The way of the future, likely yes -- but is it ready for prime time now?
