Well... I just spoke to my brokerage. At the risk of disclosing my country of residence, Toronto Dominion informed me that it is not in fact house policy, but a policy dictated by Revenue Canada, to prevent deferred capital gain. ........God Bless America!!

James and D, my boxes are very simple and small, all in one account now. Amzn, 900 long/short shares Yhoo, 100 long/short shares not margined at all. The account is relatively large and liquid; I have some long shares(such as Intc) in the A/c providing big cushions.
